Migration and the British Empire have had a huge impact on the development of Scotland. Many Scots emigrated from Scotland during this period, an not just from the Highlands. Many of those who left settled in places that were part of the British Empire, such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and had a significant impact there.
At the same time many immigrants arrived in Scotland; mostly Irish, but also Italian, Lithuanians and Jews. They had a significant impact on Scotland, as did the fact that Scotland was part of Britain and helped to rule over the British Empire.
