Liberty, Brotherhood, Equality. These three words affected modern Europe more than any others after the French Revolution of 1789. The coming of democracy and republicanism after the execution of King Louis XVI shocked the European monarchies and ushered in a new age.
However, the ideals of the French Revolution soon gave way to Terror and then dictatorship under Napoleon Bonaparte. It was only in 1815 that Europe emerged from the devastation of the Napoleonic Wars; although by then the world had changed forever.
